Jo Jenkins

Photographer and strategist based in Southern California.

I'm a conceptual artist and photographer from California's Central Valley. I hold a BA in Art from the University of California, Irvine. With nearly a decade of experience behind the lens, my practice is rooted in visual storytelling that amplifies Black voices and narratives, capturing the beauty, depth, and complexity of Black love, life, culture, and experience.

As a Black woman artist, I'm drawn to challenging the absence of authentic cultural representation in photography, with a focus on rendering melanated skin tones with both accuracy and vibrance. I'm equally drawn to natural scenes and landscapes, using the world around me as both subject and metaphor. My work also functions as a living archive, preserving the lives and stories of my family while interrogating how history, memory, and identity are visually recorded.

Alongside the art, I've spent seven years building social programs, brand identities, and digital infrastructure for small businesses, from hospitality and food and beverage to wellness and B2B tech. Both sides of the work come from the same place: knowing what makes something land with the viewer.
